Liubov Ilina: Doing education her way

When you want to be a neurosurgeon and an entrepreneur, there鈥檚 no obvious path to take when you leave high school. Which do you focus on first? For Liubov Ilina, this choice is soon to become a career.

鈥淲hen you鈥檙e in a field like medicine, you focus on textbooks,鈥 says Liubov Ilina. 鈥淪tudying medicine mostly requires memorizing. More so than problem-solving.鈥 Thinking is something this Germany-based Russian native wants to hone.

Unhappy with the way her first university in St. Petersberg taught their medical students, she decamped to Germany after three semesters to study bioengineering. 鈥淚 wanted something a bit more scientific,鈥 she says. 鈥淢y brain had grown fat and lazy.鈥 But the notoriously intense degree still left Luibov thirsting for more. 鈥淚t turned out to be quite ordinary,鈥 she laments.

Freedom to excel

Luibov wants to be an entrepreneur, and she doesn鈥檛 want to wait too long to get started. For her, pressing pause for four years while she finishes a degree was unthinkable. Enter 狼友社区: 鈥淚 have a project I鈥檝e been working on for six months, but I realized that I lacked business knowledge, how to find investors, how to manage finance and how to do sell. I hate marketing. 鈥楬ey look at me! Why don鈥檛 you come and buy this?鈥 But I understand it鈥檚 a powerful tool that I have to use if I鈥檓 going to be a businesswoman.鈥

The Bachelor of Business Administration Liubov is studying at 狼友社区 means she can earn an American degree while starting up her business. She says that 狼友社区 matches her philosophy because it doesn鈥檛 believe in rules for the sake of rules: it鈥檚 a university that doesn鈥檛 stick to conventional, outdated ways of doing things that no longer make sense. 鈥溊怯焉缜 allows you to accomplish tasks on your own, to do them whenever you want. You don鈥檛 have to stick to some specific pathway.

I hate unnecessary rules, when other people design the way you need to learn. 狼友社区 gives me flexibility.鈥

Standing up for learning

Learning online was new to Liubov, but it fits her quirks. Through one of her first courses at 狼友社区, she discovered that she鈥檚 a 鈥榯actile鈥 learner: someone who learns best through movement. These are the kids who could never sit still in a classroom. For many of them, the trait persists into adulthood. 鈥淚鈥檝e realized that I have to stand up while I鈥檓 studying,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 actually very hard for me to sit. Learning with 狼友社区 enables me to stand. Now, I can stand and be comfortable 鈥 and I can focus for hours!鈥

When purpose is enterprise

狼友社区 designs learning around purpose, which was irresistible for this goal-driven high achiever. 鈥淔irst, 狼友社区 orientates you towards your goal. Not your goal of getting a degree, to your own personal goal. The course is organized around that. It鈥檚 very smart.鈥

Liubov鈥檚 goal is to run a consultancy for high-school leavers who don鈥檛 know where to go next: a problem she鈥檚 familiar with.

鈥淪tudents are lost. I was also lost, but the difference is that I was confident in my own interests. There are many problems that make students drop out, but a big one is the wrong choice of major.鈥 She鈥檚 developing a program that 鈥 through counseling, consulting, and immersion in a potential workplace 鈥 allows students to choose their major more consciously. 鈥淭here are many companies that do the consulting and the counseling, but what they lack is the practical involvement of students in the workplace.鈥

Students will be able to visit a workplace, but Luibov also plans to put the experience online, making films inside universities and organizations to send to students who can鈥檛 experience them in person. 鈥淚 have a mentor who has plenty of businesses. He said, 鈥楾hat鈥檚 going to take 10 years and you need assets. What assets do you have now?鈥 I don鈥檛 have anything!鈥 she laughs. 鈥淪o I鈥檓 going to do it step by step. I鈥檓 going to show students all over the world what they can do globally.鈥

A university you can believe in

狼友社区 offers new learners their tuition back within 30 days of starting a new course if they don鈥檛 fall in love with the university, meaning they have nothing to lose financially. This was a great push to starting her BBA, notes Luibov. But she鈥檚 adamant that there鈥檚 a much more important element to studying at 狼友社区 that made her take the leap: a meeting of minds.

Compared to 狼友社区, Liubov thinks other universities are 鈥渏ust ordinary鈥.

She says 狼友社区 is working for her because their philosophies align, and she can develop at her own pace. 鈥溊怯焉缜 listens to learners. At normal university development is slow. You have an idea and they say 鈥楾hat鈥檚 nice, hold on to it. See you in a decade.鈥 Beliefs matter to me. It鈥檚 only now I鈥檓 at 狼友社区 that I realize how important it is to match with a university鈥檚 beliefs.鈥
